Red Studio Enquiry – Conversations

The day included a sharing of our research and experience of the residency followed by practical activities exploring a selection of work by women artists from the Ipswich Borough Council Collection led by the Drawing Exchange (artists Kayle Brandon and Lady Lucy) and the Museum’s Collections and Learning Curator Emma Roodhouse. Further speakers included: Dr Mandy Bentley “Mary Potter and Florine Stettheimer: case studies in fame, femininity and friends in high places”; Amy Budd on the development and outcomes of the exhibition 56 Artillery Lane which she co-curated at Raven Row and Dr Martha Fleming shared tips for working with collections.

The Drawing Exchange is an ongoing independent artist project by Kayle Brandon and Lady Lucy, predominantly exploring drawing experiences in social, participatory and public contexts with the aim to enable collective and personal enquiry into experimental process led drawing methods.

Emma Roodhouse

Emma Roodhouse is Collections & Learning Curator (Art) for Colchester & Ipswich Museum Service. This diverse collection not only contains over 2,000 different artists but spans from the fifteenth century to the present day. Emma began her career in museum and gallery work 19 years ago. She has worked for the Government Art Collection, the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and as Curator for Falkirk Council Museums.

Dr Mandy Bentley

Dr Mandy Bentley has had a varied career in journalism and the arts, with a particular interest in the work of early 20th century women artists. She is currently transforming her doctoral research on the little-known American artist Florine Stettheimer into the basis for a book and an exhibition.

Amy Budd

Amy Budd works with artists and curators to produce exhibitions, events and publications. She is currently Exhibitions Organiser at Raven Row and has previously worked as Exhibitions and Events Assistant at Chisenhale Gallery and as Steering Committee Chair at artist-run OUTPOST Gallery in Norwich.

Dr Martha Fleming

Dr Martha Fleming is Deputy Director of the V&A Research Institute, a five-year project of collections-based and museum focused experiments in new research and teaching practices at the Victoria and Albert Museum.  She has also been Programme Director of the Centre for Collections Based Research at the University of Reading.  She has experience as an artist making large-scale site-specific installations, and in the history and communication of science.
